Don't lose your TikTok legacy! Here's what you need to know.
Will users be able to access TikTok? The App was blocked late January 18th with a return on January 19th. For now TikTok has a stay of execution, but it still needs to work out if someone outside of China will purchase the app.
Could I use a VPN to get around the ban? Using VPN software is a possibility since the data is hosted in China, however, VPN slow down data, and using one could slow down access to the website as well as the videos you're viewing in TikTok which will make the app unusable.
It's still possible TikTok will be banned from US users, so there are several things you need to consider moving forward as a TikTok or other social media user.
Protect Your Account. Just because TikTok may be banned again in the States does not mean it will have a global ban. If you're using weak passwords, criminals outside of the US can gain access to your account without your knowledge. Now is a good time to protect your account by changing your passwords or updating to passphrases. You need to also turn on 2 Factor Authentication for your account to keep criminals from ruining your brand and stealing your important information.
Back-Up Your Favorite Content. For creators and viewers, saving the videos you don't want to lose should be a priority. This is not only for TikTok, but for all of your social media networks. Social Media is rented space and at any given time, these plaforms can be taken away from you whether it be a ban or getting tossed off your favorite service because you violated the Terms of Service. Downloading your TikTok data is an important way to keep important information such as saved videos, comments and account settings.
In the app, navigate to "Settings and Privacy," select "Download your data," and follow the prompts.
While waiting for the file to process, manually record essential details from saved videos or direct messages.
Preserve Your Following List. Keeping a record of your following list can help make sure that if you want to maintain a connection to a creator, you can follow them across platforms to sites like YouTube or Instagram, where many of them are likely cross-posting. Also, make it a habit to follow your favo
Explore Alternatives .. but beware! If TikTok shuts down again, apps like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Fanbase, and Triller offer similar functionalities. Other users are turning to emerging platforms such as RedNote, and Triller which has gained traction in app stores,
Move Your Followers to Your Email List. If you're a business owner and you're using social media accounts like TikTok to build your business, it's time you learned that social media is rented space. You don't own your social media accounts and you never will. In today's volatile social media environment, you must establish a paid email account from GoDaddy or other email hosts and work towards getting legitimate emails rather than just relying on contacts from social media. Accounts like Yahoo, Gmail and ones provided by your ISP aren't your accounts. Once you develop a social media strategy when you are not only connecting with people on social media as well as connecting with people on email, you are not at risk when you're banned on tossed in "jail" with social media platforms. Social media is a great way to connect with people, but make sure you move beyond these platforms.
Hopefully, this will give you tips to help you move forward after the near miss of TikTok being banned. Â If you have any questions, please reach out. I'm always available.
